Day Ten Pictures - Corkscrew Swamp Santuary
Naples, Florida

Since we did this one almost entirely as video, the pixilation thing has to be dealt with again -
until I figure out how to save these pictures decently.

Sorry

When we first started out on the boardwalk, we didn't see much to photograph
So we settled for an air plant

and a giant grasshopper

Which they don't grow that big in Maine due to the short growing season

It was very seriously dry as you can see from this cypress area

which should look more like this:

Later in the walk, we were able to see an anole lizard

Look close! He almost disappears into the tree, as he is a type of chameleon

Then, as we began to see a little water, we saw a brown heron

And a blue heron

And even an egret

The white egret is not native to Florida, but seems at home.
According to legend, some of these birds were blown here generations ago by a hurricane from Africa -
and they swiftly adapted. They're everywhere in Florida now!

In the same area where we saw the birds, we saw the first gator hiding in the weeds

This is how they catch most of their prey -
hiding in plain sight until they're so close they can GRAB it
Man has been known to be on the menu, if unwary

This little guy gave us quite a show while sunning on a rock

I don't think I want to be HIS dentist!

On the way off the boardwalk, we even saw some Florida deer

Maine deer are larger.......
